Ice Nine Kills

Kemba Live: Columbus, OH

August 8th 2023, the summer air is hot and humid in Columbus Ohio. The long line of fans start to trickle in the second doors open in anticipation for a truly one of a kind night. I knew going into this concert about Ice Nine Kills, but never before was I a follower. I heard tales of their theatrical performances that meld musical melodies with dark and twisted theatrics. However, I could have never expected the night that was to come. A coworker of mine at Starbucks is a huge fan of Ice Nine Kills, and even she could not truly describe the atmosphere of a Ice Nine Kills show. The fans truly added to the experience. I, as someone who has never been to a concert of this genre was utterly unsure of what to expect. I knew the mosh pits at concerts like this left nothing to be desired, but never did I imagine bodies floating above me all night long as they crowd surfed out of the pit while being pressed against the barricade so tightly I left bruised. Although, crowded hot and sweaty there was a sense of respectful comradery amongst all of us. I made unspoken friendships with all of those around me, while we all leaned on each other to not fall victim to the pulsating mass of bodies that encapsulated the stage. The slew of openers for Ice Nine Kills truly set the stage and got the crowd amped up for what is to come. Openers included, Mikes Dead, August Burns, and Veil of Maya all of whom shocked me in their ability to perform to such a high caliber.

For this being my first experience at a metal concert I was truly blown away. Ice Nine Kills was especially mind blowing. From bloody chain saws to a women cutting off her face all the way to a clown dwelling atop the stage as if it could lurch into the audience at any point. Ice Nine Kills had a way to bring all of the thrilling elements of a haunted house or scary story into their performance. I would love to see what they do on Friday the 13th, as if this show could get any bloodier. Overall, from the atmosphere to the performance to the fans, this show will be one-that I will never forget, and if you aren’t a metal fan or want to explore this genre more, take a look at attending an Ice Nine Kills concert it is an experience that you will not regret.
