Teezo Touchdown

By: Hector Mendoza

Santa Ana’s beloved Observatory was packed as Teezo Touchdown arrived with his very first headlining tour. The Beaumont, Texas based artist has been a massive sensation as he opened for Tyler, the Creator and Travis Scott in the past few years so it felt almost historical to catch his first ever headlining set. With support from Annabelle Kline, Teezo made sure that his show would be memorable and would maintain the momentum he’s been gathering for the past few years.

Annabelle Kline started the night off with a sensational DJ set that had the audience dancing along as she brought her own unique spin on the hottest music in the hip hop scene right now. Her stage presence was phenomenal as she danced around the stage and encouraged the crowd to sing and dance along to her music which helped bring a sense of unity to the venue. In celebration of Vince Staples’s new album Dark Times, which came out that very day, Annabelle played remixes of songs off the new album to show support to the rapper’s home state. As Annabelle’s set was ending, the crowd was ecstatic as Teezo’s team was screening some of Teezo’s music videos alongside other up and coming artists.

After Annabelle’s phenomenal set, Teezo came to the stage with the entire venue chanting TEEZO TEEZO TEEZO. The artist came up immediately and started the set with Careful and fans were immediately able to rap along with him. In between songs, Teezo would talk about how grateful he is to have his own tour and how much he appreciates his fans for coming and through these little breaks I would be reminded just how recent his rise to success is as his stage presence feels so natural and seasoned as if he has been touring for decades. By the time Teezo played his third song 100 Drums mosh pits were already starting to erupt and Teezo really began showing just how much of a powerful frontman he really is.

Throughout the night, the set would be dominated by songs off his new album How Do You Sleep At Night? (especially since the tour is in support of the album) and it was incredible to hear everyone roar the lyrics from both inside and outside the pits. Teezo would also show gratitude to the artists who have featured him by playing their songs as well which include Tyler, the Creator’s RUNITUP, Travis Scott’s MODERN JAM, and Drake’s 7969 Santa. A Teezo’s set came to a close with 5 O’Clock, I was left amazed at Teezo’s absolute versatility as an artist as he was able to blend indie with hip hop with alternative rock so seamlessly and bring it up to the stage in such an eloquent manner. I was already a fan of Teezo, but now I have a much deeper appreciation for him after watching his set!
