Yves Tumor

The Wiltern: Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles’ legendary venue The Wiltern was greeted with an unforgettable show on October 12th as Dagger Polyester, The Dare, and Yves Tumor came with memorable performances that fostered a night filled with excitement and energy. Starting off the night came Dagger Polyester in striking goth and BDSM-inspired outfits and a copious amount of charisma that would set the tone for the rest of the night. Heavily influenced by punk rock, Dagger Polyester brought in a sense of raw passion, aggression, and a force of personality that can only be seen in a punk rock show. Although their set only lasted 25 minutes, they managed to leave an impact on the crowd that was lucky enough to attend the show early enough to see them as there was a unanimous sense of awe as they left the stage.

Next up on the bill was an indie sleaze artist known as The Dare. Although The Dare only has a four-song EP at the moment titled The Sex EP, the New York-based artist was still able to not only fit all of his songs into his set but also bring in a few electronic remixes of his choice. Ultimately, his set felt like an electronic-fueled dance party accompanied by his larger-than-life stage persona which the audience adored from beginning to end. In this set, everything around the young artist was a prop as he danced relentlessly to his music and used drum cymbals and the microphone cords as props to dance along with the music. As his set came to a thrilling conclusion, The Dare left the audience amazed and warmed up to see the headliner of the night: Yves Tumor.

Yves Tumor has been an artist under the radar of multiple music critics for their beautifully executed experimental sound as well as how unafraid they are to fuse other genres together to create a new and unique song. Consequently, over the past few years, Yves Tumor has grown considerably well in popularity, even landing them a spot in this year’s Coachella lineup. After much praise for their ability to record an album, I cannot stress how phenomenal Tumor is at performing live as well and how they deserve as much praise as possible regarding their on-stage presence. As Tumor and their band were about to enter the stage, a sort of hype man came onto the stage to praise Tumor and their accomplishments claiming that it’s only a matter of time before they play at venues like the Crypto Arena, and once settled, the band hit the stage. Starting off their set with God Is A Circle from their newly released album Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds), Tumor arrives with an enigmatic presence as the crowd roars in celebration. The lighting of the environment made Tumor and their supporting band appear as mythical almost as if it would be too much for the crowd to fully see them in traditional lighting. Mix that in with the band’s immense charisma and ability to complement each other as Tumor gives everyone that opportunity to show their talents and we have an electrifying show. The concert contained a mix of Tumor’s older work as well as their new songs yet everywhere I looked regardless of how old the song was, the crowd was singing along and dancing to the beat. I remember specifically hearing Heaven Surrounds Us Like A Hood and feeling an ethereal rush enter my ears as I was teleported to the world that Tumor created with their beautiful lyrics and soul-binding instrumentals. As someone who has gone to concerts since the age of 15, this was a feeling that I’ve rarely ever experienced yet Tumor did it with such ease and eloquence to the point where I specifically listen to this song on my phone to get transported back to when I saw it live. As the concert drew to a close Tumor exited the stage to prepare for an encore, meanwhile, the audience still entranced by the set was yelling “Kerosene! Kerosene! Kerosene!” As soon as Tumor returned to the stage, there was a vivid roar from the crowd as Tumor resumed playing. After playing an impressive array of songs since they hit the stage, it was time to close off the show and answer those chants by ending the show with Kerosene! As soon as the introduction was played, the crowd went wild and adrenaline soon flooded the venue. Most of the crowd was able to sing the song word for word and I was once again left in awe as I got to listen to the song come straight from the artist’s mouth. The song was sung with a great euphoric and inflamed passion, and for a span of a few minutes, I once again felt like I was elevated and taken to a musical nirvana. As the song drew to a close and Tumor and the band left the stage, I was taken aback by what I witnessed. I felt like I not only witnessed a concert but a musical experience made by the acclaimed artist Yves Tumor and my hope is that others unfamiliar with their music can immerse themselves in it so they can experience what I felt that day.
